One question we get asked a lot is, "Why have you chosen to keep your products made in Australia"? Once upon a time, Australia had a thriving manufacturing industry. We made all sorts of things before globalisation, trade agreements, tariffs and subsidies, cheap off shore processing and unpleasant realities like child labour became prevalent. Gather & Moss grew out of an “at home - hand made by one Mumma’ business, so when we started to grow and change, even though this one Mumma could not manage by herself anymore, I still knew I wanted to keep things made in Australia. I did this for a few reasons. Firstly, it was something our customers were passionate about. I had been supported for 5 years by a wonderful tribe of customer who purchased our clothes out of a love of handmade and Australian Small business. I may not be making every piece with my own two hands anymore, but I was determined to keep things small and Australian made, because my customers wanted it, I wanted it and because I firmly believe in supporting the Australian manufacturing industry.
As a side note, I also strongly believe in and support the Fairtrade movement. I also believe that to be properly involved in this wonderful industry, you need to have the time and the ability to travel to the places where your products are made and to guarantee for yourself that trade is actually fair! At this time in our journey this is not an option for us, so we remain proudly 100% Australian from concept through to the very last stitch!
